Outlander won’t be sending Jamie Fraser to the future — now or ever

For anyone wondering if Outlander season 9 or 10 was going to feature Jamie Fraser going forward in time, don’t count on it.

Responding to a question on Twitter, series author Diana Gabaldon confirm that there are zero plans for her to ever send Jamie forward in time. The question first came out in honor of it being the Summer Solstice — a day in which time travel is possible for some within the world of the books. The operative words here are, of course, “for some.” Jamie does not have the gift of time travel, and it doesn’t appear as though shaking up the show’s central mythology is one of Diana’s top priorities. Do we understand the fun that could come out of seeing Jamie Fraser in the 20th century? Sure, since it’s totally a fish-out-of-water sort of situation and those often make for fun storylines across various mediums.

Yet, there’s something valuable to staying true to one’s original intention, and the whole point of time-travel within Outlander is that it’s not something everyone can do.

Is it possible that the series could depart far from Gabaldon’s source material and make time-travel possible for more people? In theory, sure, but doing that seems like far too big of a change and would likely enrage fans of the books. We don’t see that happening, especially since the books are the primary inspiration for the show and there’s never a deliberate attempt by the writers to completely alter the source material.

Given that there are two more books in Gabaldon’s series, there’s still plenty of mystery with this story … it’s just probably going to revolve around some other things. There is such a richness with these characters and this world that time travel may be far on the back-burner by the time we get to the end of this journey.
