Much like the final episode of season 3 before it, it appears as though Outlander season 4 is going to have plenty of scenes in its finale set in the dead of night.
Tonight, both Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe mentioned on social media that they’ve been hard at work doing some night shoots on the series and they’ve just wrapped up the latest day of them (see below). What’s somewhat poetic about this, at least from a writing point of view, is that we’re watching the sun set on the West Coast of America, writing this while the cast in Scotland is seeing the sunrise. Isn’t that lovely?
We do certainly understand the value of doing night shoots close to the end of shooting for this show. For one, can you imagine doing these in the dead of winter a few months back? That would’ve been brutal. They offer up a sense of variety for this show and beyond that, some of the most dangerous stuff naturally tends to happen in the middle of the night. That is why it does make a certain degree of sense for there to be these big finale sequences that take place after sunset. You’re building towards something big and often, these night shoots are the culmination. Another bit of evidence that the series is working on something big right now is just how secretive everyone has been.
(Major downside of night shoots, beyond the exhaustion: Given all of the recent bug infestations in Scotland, we imagine that all of the pests make filming rather tricky!)
Based on what Balfe says on her account, signs point to some really beautiful stuff coming up … though you are going to have to wait until 2019 in order to see it. The series is premiering on Starz this November and even if the show airs right through the holidays, you’re still likely looking at a finale airing in either late January or February. It could be even later, depending on how the network decides to really schedule things out.
We haven’t gotten official word yet that filming is done (there is at least one location reserved through the end of the month), but we have to be nearing the end of the road for this season.
