Timeless canceled by NBC after two seasons; movie still possible

Alas, it doesn’t seem as though there are going to be any more missions for Timeless at NBC — at least for the time being. The series has been canceled after two seasons.

According to Entertainment Weekly, one of the reasons why the series is over is because the network and the studio Sony Pictures TV couldn’t come up with a financially feasible way to keep it going. That’s something we speculated about in the past; it felt like there had to have been some talks going in order for the decision to take this long. Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out in the way in which we liked.

As for what the future is when it comes to the series, it does appear as though there are still talks about there being a movie at NBC to help better wrap up the story. That seems to be the new priority, and while that’s not anywhere as good as a new season, it’s at least something. Keep your eyes peeled for news on that.

This news comes as a gut-punch to many fans who have been fighting to keep the show on the air for a while. The ratings were admittedly not great for the second season, and while we can attribute that in part to a very difficult timeslot Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern, it really doesn’t matter since NBC is going to make whatever decision they are going to make. We do understand that it comes from an outside studio and it is a little costlier because of that than one produced in-house, but the show is so loved that it would’ve been nice to see something happen.

We’ll touch more on if there can be a season 3 elsewhere at some point very soon (update: read here!), but for now this is difficult news to digest — especially after all of the weeks of hopes and possible signs that there were at least discussions happening. Fingers crossed for a movie or more; Rufus does still need to be saved!
