It looks as though the Roseanne spin-off The Conners is officially going to happen over on ABC — and at some point this fall!
Tonight, the network officially confirmed that the spin-off will happen and that the majority of the original cast is going to return led by Sara Gilbert (Darlene). Meanwhile, John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Lecy Goranson (Becky) and Michael Fishman (Michael) are all going to be coming back, as well. Roseanne Barr is not returning, which comes about as a result of her being fired earlier this summer due to a racist tweet directed at Valerie Jarrett.
In a statement, ABC made it clear tonight that “Roseanne Barr will have no financial or creative involvement in the new series.” Executive producer Tom Werner reached a settlement with Barr in which she will be effectively paid off from him so that the series can continue to air.
Roseanne also issued a statement of her own tonight:
“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”
There are currently set to be ten episodes of the new spin-off coming to ABC, but there’s no word precisely as to what the premiere date will be. If we were to guess, our feeling here is that the show will be ready to go at some point by late fall. It’s probably going to be tough to make a September premiere given the massive delay in the writers room opening. It will premiere in the 8:00 p.m. Tuesday timeslot that we previously saw occupied by Roseanne proper. Why this makes some sense for the network is because the show’s ratings were through the roof in season 10. They clearly want to keep whatever audience they can here.
