The Walking Dead season 9 will feature a time jump

Walking Dead season 8

For anyone concerned about how The Walking Dead season 9 could set the stage for so many major changes, including the departures of both Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan, a big part of it may have to do with playing around with time. After spending most of the past few seasons trying to tell stories in a fairly concentrated way, the show may be bringing you at least a little closer to that vision of the future that we saw potentially in the early part of season 8.

This news was reported by none other than new showrunner Angela Kang, who made the following comments (via THR) while at a Kick-Ass Women of AMC panel on Wednesday:

“We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story … We’re working on a season that has a really fresh look and feel. We come in on some pretty fun stuff. I’m really focusing a lot on the core character relationships in the show that have kind of been long-lasting, as well as all of our wonderful series regulars.”

The idea of The Walking Dead as a franchise playing around with time is hardly a foreign concept, mostly because of the fact that we have seen this already on Fear the Walking Dead this season. They, quite effectively, jumped back and forth between timelines before eventually confirming that Madison had in fact died to protect others at the stadium. While we do not agree with the ending by any means (losing Madison is not something we’re remotely okay with), at the same time the journey that got us to this point was absolutely something that we welcomed … and could welcome it again if it was used effectively to lead up to the departure of Rick.
