Jane the Virgin star using Emmy promotion money for scholarship
Gina Rodriguez has received some awards consideration in the past from varying awards shows for Jane the Virgin, and while she’s probably an underdog to land a nomination year year for the role, she really should be considered a favorite. That’s without even mentioning what she is deciding to do for an undocumented student looking to go to college.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Rodriguez confirmed that she is using her Emmy money (allotted via CBS Television Studios) to allow this Latinx person to go to college. She also had the following to say about it:
“FYC is a bizarre dance … Whatever you do requires an insane amount of money. Our show has always jumped at any opportunity to help me do something for the Latinx community … So I asked my showrunner, Jennie [Snyder Urman], if we could do something different with the money this year.”
So why is she choosing to release this information public? As she explains, it’s really a means to convince other people to do similar actions for others moving forward:
“It’s taboo to talk about the money being spent, but it’s the reality … I think sharing this might inspire other people to do something similar. You can desire recognition and, at the same time, decide to not play in the confines of the game as it’s set up.”
We’ll see whether or not Rodriguez gets a nomination (she is still submitted within the Actress in a Comedy Series) when the Emmys are officially announced in July. If you want to get some more information regarding the Emmys and our personal picks, you can see them over at the link here.
