For those out there wondering about a Shadowhunters season 3 return date, unfortunately at this point in time it’s still not official.
Despite a listing online that the show would be returning on Thursday, August 16 with new episodes, Freeform told CarterMatt today that this information is not accurate. (Update: That listing has now been removed.)
As of right now, we are still assuming that the series will be premiering come 2019 with its final twelve episodes. That’s what was announced on June 4 and if anything changes on this subject, we will let you know right away.
For those who are interested in saving the series, we understand there being a desire to have the episodes as soon as possible — that builds more enthusiasm and attention around them for someone else to maybe want to jump in the pool and snag the series. From a Freeform standpoint, we imagine that bundling the last twelve episodes together is easier to promote – even if they did something different recently with Shadowhunters.
As for what’s coming up over these final twelve episodes, the first ten of them are the second half of season 3, which was filmed long before the cancellation news first came in. They weren’t made with a possible endgame in mind, but hopefully will meet many fans’ expectations. The final two episodes are meant to wrap up some of the story, but based on what CarterMatt reported, there could still be enough story left open for a season 4 provided that another network chooses to bring the show back down the road. Keep tweeting #SaveShadowhunters and do what you can in order to make your voice heard. We do think there is still a reason for hope, but saving a show is always an uphill battle and will take a lot of effort from fans in order to make it happen. Just remember to keep your voices heard and stay unified — we’ve seen via the past couple of months that anything is possible, even if there are no guarantees.
Of course, we welcome your thoughts and speculation on the future of Shadowhunters in the attached comments below.
