This Is Us season 3 bringing on board The Things They Carried author

This Is Us season 2

To make it clear just how seriously This Is Us season 3 is taking the upcoming story of Jack Pearson in Vietnam, the show is bringing on board someone with a better understanding of that world than almost anyone.

According to a report coming in via DeadlineThe Things They Carried author Tim O’Brien is joining the NBC show as a consultant. The Things They Carried are some of the most well-known stories about the Vietnam War, inspired in part by some of O’Brien’s own experiences after being drafted to take part.

Here is what executive producer Dan Fogelman had to say about this news:

“Tim has been a writing hero of mine since college … I’ve written more papers on The Things They Carried than I am comfortable sharing. It was incredibly intimidating bringing him into our room to discuss a Vietnam plot line – and it was even more rewarding. I’ve never said this before, but I can’t wait to be rewritten by him.”

This is another reminder of just how seriously This Is Us is taking authenticity on the story of Jack’s past and how important they believe it is to his journey. They don’t want to skimp over any details or make real-life veterans feel as though their stories are being trivialized. If this level of care was shown to many other stories that are out there on television, we have a feeling that the medium would be even stronger and better than it is.

While Jack’s time in Vietnam may not encompass the whole season, it will make up at least a decent chunk of the start of it. Kevin is visiting the country and that seems to be the lead-off for whatever sort of emotional story is going from there.

This Is Us season 3 premieres this fall on NBC.
