Outlander season 4: Caitriona Balfe on Claire’s different perspective

Outlander season 4

Outlander season 4 filming is almost complete, and with that, we feel like many of the cast members have a pretty good grasp on what it’s all about. They’ve seen the world through their characters’ eyes and worked first-hand to develop who they are and what they’ve been through.

For Caitriona Balfe, that is especially the case given that she’s been around from the very beginning as Claire Fraser. She’s seen a lot of highs and lows as this character and understands how different she is now and what she is capable of. Much of this informs the character that we see moving into the upcoming batch of episodes premiering this November. For a little more of Balfe’s own thoughts on that, here is what she had to say to GoldDerby:

“The beauty of being on a long-running show is that you get to be surprised by your character still, and this is a much more settled version of Claire. We see a much more nurturing side of her. Before, it was a lot of the drama of discovering love, or being a professional or the surgeon and that being the focus. But this, it is much more about home, and creating that and the value of having that.”

Balfe also goes on to discuss with the site an interesting thematic twist to this season that we’re also very excited about: Claire discovering the origins of American democracy so many years before it evolves into what she knew in the 20th century. It’s a lovely paradox in that her past is the country’s future, and her future exists within the country’s past. Those two parallels can be played in a rather lovely way, though we do not presume that there’s going to be all that much jumping about between the time periods for Claire this season (unless, of course, there are flashbacks — we think we’ll see the 20th century instead more through the lens of other characters like Brianna).

Time travel is always going to be a part of Outlander in some way, but as always we love that the focus seems to be primarily on the characters and seeing this extraordinary world from their point of view. Seeing how Claire has changed as a person, and how she and Jamie could both change when Brianna eventually arrives in America, are on the top of the list of the things CarterMatt is most excited about in relation to the story to come. The hard part is just waiting until later this fall to experience it as a viewer.

From an acting point of view, these changes also have to be exciting … and they may help to keep Caitriona as an Emmy contender for some time to come.
