The Affair season 4 episode 1 review: Helen’s hurricane

The Affair season 4

The Affair kicked off season 4 with an episode Sunday that had a fairly substantial challenge — picking up all of the stories and then swinging from one perspective to the next. This was a story about broken relationships and difficult conversations that needed to happen.

Let’s start with the end of this episode, which featured an important conversation between Noah and Helen. She was pretty sure that Trevor was about to come out over dinner, but then Noah turned up like a violent storm. This led to the two having a pretty-heated debate on the subject of his comfort level around her and whether or not there is anything that can be done to rectify the problems that lead to Trevor shutting down around him. Moving out to Los Angeles, has it has turned out, has once again opened up a divide in Helen’s heart. As she calls it, this is a hurricane. It’s a storm that she is likely going to be dealing with for some time and we don’t see it going away, even if she tried to tell Noah that they should keep their distance from each other.

There were certainly a few moments within this episode that felt like vintage Los Angeles, including a new neighbor showing up (Emily Browning playing a not-dead person!) offering up an opportunity to do goat yoga. The show is embracing its new setting and style, which it probably needs after such a long break from being on the air.

We also have one other question worth pondering over, though, and it’s a big one: Where is Alison? It seems as though she’s missing based on the premiere, but her and even Cole in general weren’t the focus of this premiere. (At least Cole had some sort of a role.) This is something to consider moving forward, as is wondering what’s going to happen to Vik! The episode ended with him collapsing, which suggests to us that the hurricane has followed Helen home even with Noah not around.

CarterMatt Verdict

This was a very good episode of The Affair insofar as the series resetting itself. Yet, the jury’s still out on the arc for the season given that we are still in the early going and the full cast hasn’t even gotten all the necessary attention just yet. This is something that may come in due time, but the writers seem intent on making us wait.

For now, we don’t mind … but we’ll see if we feel that way in a matter of weeks. This was a worthy start to what feels like a new chapter.
