Chicago PD season 6 spotlight: Where should Jay Halstead’s story go next?

Over the course of the next several weeks, Saturday is going to be a Chicago PD day here at CarterMatt! We’re going to be sharing new character spotlights that give you a sense of where we want stories to go with some different characters.

Today, that means putting the focus specifically on Jesse Lee Soffer’s character of Jay Halstead, someone who we’ve come to care about immensely. He’s a great cop, but more than that a person who we want to see find some sort of peace. He’s suffered for a long time with his PTSD and a desire to at times shed his own skin. Moving into the new season, we would like to see him develop some sort of peace.

How can he find that? We’ve got a few different suggestions on that particular subject below.

1. Halstead in consistent therapy – We’d actually like to see characters on some of these shows tackle mental-health problems in a consistent way, and putting Jay in this environment would be great from both a character-building and acting standpoint. It would allow Halstead the chance to really work through some of what happened to him in the military and, beyond that, some of the things he’s still dealing with in Chicago. You could also probably mine a good bit of story out of his relationship with Lindsay.

2. Jay honing his work relationships – Whether it be with Hailey Upton, with Kevin Atwater, or with Antonio Dawson, wouldn’t it be nice to get some great friendship scenes of everyone hanging outside of work — or even outside of Molly’s? We’ve gotten a little bit of this but it would be nice to see these characters in a different environment, one where they aren’t in danger and is also outside of their familiar routine.

3. Finding more love within himself – One of the things that Jay does need to figure out is how to care for himself more when there is not a love interest around — he tends to throw himself into work as a way to mask some of his feelings, and finding a better sense of self-sufficiency and stability in season 6 could make him even better suited for a new relationship when one presents itself.
