Grey’s Anatomy season 15 character spotlight: What’s next for Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith?
One of the most interesting things about Meredith moving into season 15 is that she’s already got the career that is the stuff of legend. She’s won one of the most prestigious awards in medicine and, to go along with that, has done work on a new life-saving medical method. She’s still got her prominent position and of course isn’t giving that up anytime soon.
Yet, is there something else still out there for her? We do think that Meredith’s the sort of person who is ambitious enough to never stop even with some of her accolades. What we do want to see for her across season 16 is figuring out what that next big thing is and then acting on it. We like Meredith best when she’s driven and inspirational — nobody can be like that all of the time, but we are certainly interested in seeing more of her in this form.
As for the struggle, we wouldn’t necessarily like to see what happens for her when something terrible goes wrong with either a new procedure or a patient, but there does need to be some of that in the episodes ahead. It allows for more great performances from Pompeo and you should always want that in a show like this. Maybe you find some way to bring in some other relatives of hers or even some of Derek’s siblings beyond Amelia, just for the sake of adding a little more nostalgia. Even if you don’t, more of Meredith and Amelia working together is always a treat since there is such a potential for great push and pull.
Now, the love interest question. We’ll probably address this more in a future episode, but if the series goes this route we don’t really want to see the show go in the will-they-or-won’t-they direction. It’s more interesting to us at this point if there is an instant connection and quick relationship, but then a wide array of other problems beyond that when the characters have more skin in the game. We want Meredith to be challenged in a relationship by someone who treats her like she deserves, while also still having his own distinct opinions and outlook. All good relationships have a push-and-pull and there’s an opportunity next seaosn to create a great one.
