Should The Last Kingdom get season 4 renewal before season 3 premieres?
Is there a way that the streaming service could help to compensate for the long wait? Absolutely so — they could issue the show an early season 4 renewal prior to its return! We do think that there is some merit in it, given mostly that this is a show with an extremely devoted audience, and there clearly remains a market for historical dramas. With The Last Kingdom shifting over to Netflix as more of an exclusive international partner, this is the streaming server’s opportunity to really show a commitment to the show in the long-term. We do think that the market is there, though we do wonder if it could end up returning at the same time as Vikings and that ends up crowding the market a little bit.
Do we think that the odds are particularly high that we end up getting an early renewal? Alas, probably not, mostly because season 3 is premiering so long after season 2 and with that, we wouldn’t be shocked if Netflix chose to take their time seeing how The Last Kingdom fares in the overall viewership before making a firm long-term decision on the future of the series. Unfortunately, the streaming service doesn’t actually release any of their numbers to the public and we may be forced to wait at least a few more weeks / months following the premiere to learn as to whether or not it will be back for more.
Nonetheless, we’ll keep our fingers crossed because The Last Kingdom is certainly a show worth getting a considerable amount more of in the years to come.
