Could Agents of SHIELD season 6 in the summer actually save the show?
There are a few different reasons for Agents of SHIELD moving to summer, but one of the most honest ones is simply this: It wasn’t going to be able to sustain itself any longer airing during the season. Its live ratings were too low to air any night of the week other than Friday, and that was with Marvel helping to ensure that it comes back for more seasons. Its ratings on Friday were barely enabling it to stay afloat.
In moving the series to the summer, ABC is gambling that there are going to be more people around to watch a superhero show in the same timeframe in which most people are eager to check out superhero movies. They are also just hoping that there will be more viewers around in general than on Friday nights during the season. Agents of SHIELD has always been an exceptional show in DVR / streaming ratings, which is one of the main reasons why it has managed to make it back on the air for another season. Yet, is there some sort of way in which to move some of these viewers over to watching it live? We think there’s a chance and that’s why the summer gamble is worthwhile.
If SHIELD stayed on during the fall / spring, it’s possible we don’t get a season 6 at all; if there is, there probably isn’t a season 7. At least in the summer, we do think there’s a smaller chance of a long-term future.
(Just for reference, we’re writing this article without thinking too much about the end of Infinity War — story-wise, it absolutely makes sense to wait until the next Avengers hits theaters to bring the show back.)
