People of Earth canceled, despite season 3 renewal, at TBS

People of EarthIt’s not often that you see a show renewed, only to have that decision reversed down the road. Yet, it does happen, and that is precisely what has transpired now with the TBS series People of Earth.

In a post on Twitter Friday, show creator David Jenkins noted that despite the scripts being written for a third season, these episodes are never going to make it to air:

Just got word last night: TBS has cancelled People of Earth. Thank you to everyone who was a fan of the show and enjoyed its gentle, amiable sci-fi weirdness. It was an honor sharing this show with you. Let’s do it again soon. Love you all.

Are we bummed out about this? Tremendously, since People of Earth is one of those fun comedies that, perhaps in different circumstances, could have found a way to work. It had a great cast including Wyatt Cenac, Ana Gasteyer, and Oscar Nunez, and beyond that the whole alien-abduction aspect of it is something that we haven’t seen all that much of ever since the days of 3rd Rock from the Sun. This was a show that was incredibly unique and that is, in part, one of the reasons why we could see it becoming more of a cult favorite in the years to come. There is something that is just continually appealing about an underdog series that feels as though it never quite got some of the love in which it deserved.

For those who want to see some of the cast members elsewhere, Cenac already has another show in Problem Areas over on HBO. Hopefully, there are some interesting roles that become available for many of the other cast members coming up in the weeks and months ahead.

What do you think about the news coming in regarding a People of Earth cancellation, and the way in which it came about with TBS previously giving the show another season? Be sure to share right now in the comments.
