Queen Sugar season 3 and the state of the ratings
At this point, we are three episodes into the OWN series, and that’s really the point in a series where you can start to remove outliers such as heavy competition on a given night or viewers distracted by other things going on in the world. Three episodes is a good time to formulate some sort of an average.
When it comes to Queen Sugar, so far season 3 is bringing in on average a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and close to 1.15 million viewers in live+same-day metrics. Are those great numbers? That all depends on how you look at it.
In terms of cable numbers as a whole, they’re pretty good — in this current TV climate, getting more than a million people to watch just about anything that you do is something that is very commendable and worthy of some celebration. There’s such a temptation to want to record things and watch them later via your DVR, or just binge-watch at the end of the season. Getting this many people to commit to either watching live or an hour or two later is great.
However, when it comes to year-to-year comparisons, you can certainly make the case for the numbers being a little bit less stellar. To date, on average season 3 is down more than 20% in both the demo and total viewers from the season 2 average, and that’s a pretty big drop for any show no matter what network it airs on. We don’t take that as a sign that Queen Sugar is in major danger just yet, but you do want to see a little bit better retention. If the series at least keeps this average the rest of the season, at least OWN knows more that it has a stable audience.
