Code Black season 3 episode 7 review: Rox’s past, romance, and more

Code Black season 3 episode 7 on CBS Wednesday night of course featured a series of difficult cases, but beyond that, also gave us a pretty good opportunity to learn more about the character of Rox.

Over the course of this hour, we learned a good bit when it comes to some of Rox’s history with dance — namely, a program that helped her when she was younger. There was some hardship and tension present there but by the end of it, she was able to find a sense of common ground and better sense of understanding. We also saw that between the two different dance teams that were feuding through most of the episode — one that ended with an epic dance-off in the hospital lobby to determine the eventual winner.

Out of everything we expected on Code Black this season, we’ve now had both a musical number and dance-off. Consider that two things we never imagined we’d be getting. Rox even broke it down at one point!

Overall, though, this was an episode that was much about big decisions and characters figuring out precisely what is best for them — both now and also in the future. For a young mother, this included her making the right decision when it comes to comes to her baby — that included in her situation an open adoption, which would allow her to continue to be involved with her baby. She recognized that she wasn’t ready to be a parent, but didn’t want to be completely forgotten about in the process.

What’s going on with Ariel and Max?

In tonight’s subplot Max decided to open up to her about being a jerk — he tried to push her away, and he did that after she made it clear that she wanted to go to the school dance. It turns out that Max’s illness would keep him from going to the dance and he lashed out so that he wouldn’t have to admit it. For him, appearing as though he was “cool” was a good mask for him.

In general, this was a romantic episode across the board — sure, nothing is resolved with any relationship just yet, but we do think some were pushed in the right direction.

CarterMatt Verdict

Sometimes, emotional stories can come out of nowhere and we certainly had that tonight — we also had Ethan lovingly staring at Rox mid-dance routine, so there’s that. Tonight was another reminder that, in the end, CBS really shouldn’t have canceled this show.
