America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal cast in Disney’s Stargirl

Grace -

America’s Got Talent winner Grace VanderWaal is getting set to take on a completely different role — one that is not within the realm of reality TV or music at all.

Today, Disney announced that VanderWaal, who has recorded an album and gone on a headlining tour since winning the show a couple of years ago, will be playing the lead role in their upcoming Stargirl adaptation. This is a project that is being intended for their upcoming streaming service, which is slated to launch in 2019. We should not here that this Stargirl is completely separate from the DC Comics character, who was a part of an earlier season of Legends of Tomorrow.

According to a report from Deadline VanderWaal beat out about 700 other people in landing the role, and director Julia Hart had the following to say about bringing her on board:

“I knew she was Stargirl almost immediately … The world knows what a talented performer she is, and I cannot wait for everyone to see just how many sides there are to this special and magical young woman.”

There’s clearly an appealing reason in which to bring VanderWaal on board in this role right away. For starters, this is a chance for her fans, who are probably going to line up to watch this, to see a totally new side of her. Yet, she will still bring the element of a fresh face to the project, which is something that many casting directors often seek for memorable roles.

When it comes to America’s Got Talent as a whole, we do think that this move benefits them even if they had virtually nothing to do with the hire at present. In bringing Grace on board, Disney is giving further credibility to some of their past winners — something that was at one point greatly lacking but has changed in recent years. For a while, Terry Fator was the only champ we’d consider to be a huge success. However, since that time we’ve seen Mat Franco become an enormous success while Darci Lynne has a number of tour dates set up for the remainder of the year.
