While an Absentia season 2 renewal is not 100% official just yet, we’ve definitely got a strong indicator that it is coming.
In a press release this week, Canadian broadcaster Corus (who owns Showcase, the network that aired the Stana Katic series) confirmed that Absentia is on their slate of returning shows for 2018 / 2019. What that means is that they are certainly planning to have more of the series, which is exciting given that there’s been so little news on the subject as of late. Heck, the only news we’ve really had over the past few weeks is that unfortunately, it’s not eligible for the Emmys. We’re still hoping for clarification on that.
What does this announcement mean for the future of Absentia in America, where it aired on Amazon for the first season? Not all that much. A few months ago, it was reported that the series was in the process of being renewed at Amazon for as many as two seasons. What’s taking it so long? Potentially, a number of legal issues and minor negotiations — a good comparison here is Outlander. It was as early as January when we started hearing about renewal talks via Starz executive Chris Albrecht. However, the show didn’t actually get a formal renewal for seasons 5 and 6 until last month. It’s not that unusual that we’re waiting this long for a renewal — it would be if the show was set to resume filming this month, but signs point towards production happening in August. So long as the story is set in advance there’s less of a hurry to have another batch of episodes ordered right away.
For now, consider the Corus placement for Absentia another positive sign that more is coming. Once there is something more to report on, of course we will let you know.
