For anyone out there who wanted to get some rather-wonderful news when it comes to Big Brother Canada season 7, know this: There’s no more need to wait! The Global series is coming back for another batch of episodes, this time without the need for a lengthy fan campaign to save the show.
So what made the renewal different this time around? The simplest answer we can offer is ratings, given that the series’ sixth season performed much better for most of the year compared to the one that aired before it. While we do consider TV ratings to be in part outdated, they do still matter — especially for Canadian series given that there is in general a smaller pool of potential viewers. It’s true that Big Brother Canada does make income a number of other ways, as well, including via ads on the official site / the live feeds as well as in-show product integration. All of that put together this year led to the series performing well enough for another batch of episodes in 2019.
Are there any big takeaways that the series should have from season 6? By and large, we don’t think production went into twist overdrive this season and we appreciated that. We’re still not a huge fan of the triple eviction and the whole Canada’s Vote twist led to Erica’s unfortunate departure, but sometimes things like the latter just happen with this show. If a move like that both saved a favorite and got rid of someone more disliked by the viewership at large, there probably wouldn’t be as much anger about it.
Hopefully, more news will surface later this year on season 7, at least in terms of the casting process. For now, remember this: Big Brother season 20 is going to be premiering itself on Wednesday, June 27 on Global in Canada and on CBS in the United States. (If only Big Brother Canada had a US television partner…)
