Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Arkady Babchenko, North Korea
Here’s the twist: Despite claiming to some that he had read the letter, Trump actually hadn’t read the letter. As you would imagine, that does make matters a little bit awkward since nobody knows as to what his reasoning was for taking said meeting.
From here, the current-events discussion continued with Arkady Babchenko, the supposedly-murdered journalist who turned up alive on Ukrainian TV. The entire scheme was set up to foil an elaborate plot — while this maybe didn’t get as big of headlines here in America, it did take much of the rest of the world by storm. It’s a crazy story, one full of the sort of crazy twists you only read about in movies. These two news items made for a pretty fantastic opening of the show tonight, though we were absolutely surprised there wasn’t more of a focus put on Roseanne given how big a story that was. Then again, do we really need a John Oliver take on Roseanne? Haven’t we gotten enough takes on her from other people? It certainly feels as though that’s possible.
Royal family update
It’s a quick one, but of course Oliver had a lot of fun with the “Royal expert” who did interviews around the Prince Harry – Meghan Markle wedding … who was actually just a dude from America using a good accent.
