Should Hawaii Five-0 season 9 bring in a new adversary?

Hawaii Five-0 season 9 is set to premiere this fall on CBS, but we like to think that it’s never too early to start some of our speculation as to what could be coming up!

With that, we want to focus in most of this article on the subject of Big Bads — in particular, bringing in a new one! Is this something that makes a whole lot of sense for the folks over at CBS to consider?

If there is an easy case to make for the network doing this, it is simple this: Bringing in a new villain, especially a long-term one, helps to build up a backstory and create dramatic tension that you can back up for the remainder of the season. On some level, maybe you have that already with Adam’s story and the potential frame job that is (hopefully) going on there — the main reason we say “hopefully” is because if it’s not a frame job, that means that Adam did it and that’s not a world we want to imagine.

Rather than just focusing on Adam, what about bringing in a new adversary for Steve or Danny? To us, what would be rather interesting is bringing forward a new foe who has some connection to Danny’s past and is taking on some sort of long-term play in order to destroy him. Remember here destroying someone doesn’t always have to be in terms of a shoot-out; instead, it would be interesting for Five-0 to run into a more intellectual opponent who challenges them and tries to find a way to destroy them in terms of their careers and their reputations. Steve does have a tendency to break the rules while out in the field, so what would he do in order to challenge that? It doesn’t have to be as serious as what Pride went through on NCIS: New Orleans this past season, but there could be some fun in exploring this and seeing what happens when Steve is challenged in a different sort of manner than he has been in a while. (We understand that he’s had many an intellectual opponent in the past, but why not bring another back now?)

Basically, Hawaii Five-0 is getting close to its tenth season and what we tend to find here is this: The longer things go, the more essential it is to find new ways to shake things up.
