Roseanne spin-off revolving around Darlene may be coming to ABC
We’re certainly surprised that this may be happening, but apparently, a Roseanne spin-off revolving around Darlene is something being currently considered.
According to a report from TMZ, there are some discussions happening behind-the-scenes at the moment for ABC to do a show revolving in part around Sara Gilbert’s character of Darlene — one that feasibly still be set within the Roseanne universe. There have been calls to various cast members as of late in order to gauge interest and apparently, there are some parties out there seriously considering giving this a go. It would keep most of the crew who was a part of the original show employed, and that is a big tangible benefit to considering this.
While all of this sounds interesting enough and we know that Darlene is an interesting-enough character to really work in this setting, we do still have many different questions. For starters, just how involved would Roseanne be in the project? Earlier this week, there were reports floating around out there suggesting that ABC was reasonably interested in doing a show with much of the original cast, but it would be a new property in order to avoid having to pay the now-fired Roseanne Barr for her original creations. Unless there is some sort of deal to be worked out, it feels like this sort of spin-off would need to at the very least acknowledge Barr as the creator of some of these characters — given that she was a part of Roseanne and the development from the very beginning.
Our concerns aside, this would probably be the ideal for ABC from a money-making perspective since they put Roseanne out of sight and, presumably, out of mind for many viewers. Yet, we do think that Barr would spend her days tweeting up a storm about this and it could prove rather challenging for a number of other reasons.
Do you think that a Darlene centric spin-off series is a good idea for the Roseanne brand, or are we looking more at something doomed to fail? Share right now in the comments.
