Legion season 3 renewal confirmed by FX

Great news for everyone who loves Legion as much as we do at CarterMatt — a season 3 for the series is coming to FX at some point in the near future! We don’t quite know how it is possible given creator Noah Hawley’s insanely-busy schedule, but it appears as though new episodes will air starting in 2019.

The good news was announced by Eric Schrier and Nick Grad, Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. In a statement, here is some of what Schrier had to say:

“Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season … We are incredibly proud of Noah Hawley’s achievement and are honored to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television storytelling. We are also grateful for the contributions of our executive producers, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Jeph Loeb with Marvel Television, as well as our outstanding cast and crew of this groundbreaking show.”

So far through season 2, Legion is averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic in live+same-day estimates; with that being said though, this is a series that is incredibly time-shifted, as are many original programs at FX these days. What matters the most to this particular network is that they continue to find some ways in which to have people out there talking about the series and watching it. It’s one of the most cognitive, smart, and fascinating programs of its kind, and there is a reason why we’ve got Dan Stevens in our list of Emmy contenders in the category of Actor in a Drama Series. This is a show not only about a human with super powers, but it’s about a human that’s also facing mental illness, which is something not often touched on in this genre. This is so much more then just another superhero series and it’s brilliant.

Hopefully, more information regarding the third season will be made clear either later this year or in early 2019; for the time being, there are still a couple of episodes to go in season 2.
