A new Poldark season 4 photo — and lamenting the coverage of it
In some ways, we get it — Ross Poldark is an appealing guy. The same goes for actor Aidan Turner. Yet, we’ve felt like there was a reason why the show drifted away from the shirtless Ross photos since they became a bit of an internet sensation during the first season. All of a sudden, the attention moved away from the brilliant performance Turner gave and into his “heartthrob” status. It became less about the character and more about his sex appeal, which we do think in many ways is counter-intuitive to what this show is and what it should be. Poldark, as a whole, is about so much more than characters at face value. It’s a complicated, intimate story about relationships and finding the truth within your heart. It’s not superficial; however, the overt attention that is being put on photos like these is more superficial than we can even write.
Is this an effective marketing strategy for the show? Maybe, given that the image offers up the ability to get Poldark on the front page of many newspapers. Yet, we don’t think it needs to be this way, and we don’t think it’s going to help to trivialize an actor of Turner’s quality by transfixing only on his appearance. It takes away from the work, and with a show like Poldark, we really don’t think it needs this type of coverage in order to succeed. In fact we think that Turner’s performance is so good that we want to see the Emmys finally give him the recognition he truly deserves for his performance (you can read a bit more of why we think he’s deserving here.)
So to all of the members of the press being transfixed on Turner’s appearance in the photo, can’t we be a little bit better than this?
