Summer TV Preview: Should you watch Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger?

Cloak & Dagger

What’s coming up this summer on Freeform? We certainly think that one of the most ambitious entries out there is Marvel’s Cloak & Daggerwhich gives the network a chance to try their hand at a popular comic-book property. If done right, this could be one of the most exciting shows out there. However, if done wrong we can imagine some of the outrage already.

For now, though, we’re reasonably optimistic about what is going to be coming up, at least judging from some of the material that is out there. The trailer below is intense, the costumes look pretty decent, and the casting seems to be fairly on point. This is a show that will appeal to those who loved the source material, but we don’t think that it is limited simply to them. Instead, this season should appeal to anyone who loves the story about two survivors who team up in the midst of a lot of chaos. The logline for the show gives you a good sense as to what’s coming:

Olivia Holt (former Disney Channel star and Hollywood Records recording artist) will portray Tandy, a once privileged little girl, who watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life-changing event. Aubrey Joseph (“Run All Night,” “The Night Of“) will portray Tyrone who as a young man wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless; but when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.

Will this series be a major hit for Freeform? We do think that the Marvel franchise has a lot of pull and, beyond that, this is a network with the perfect demographic for the show. In the end, though, it’s going to just come down to quality and buzz — and that can’t be judged until the premiere airs on June 7.
