The Middle spin-off starring Eden Sher plotted at ABC
Following the recent series finale over on ABC, it appears though the network may not be done officially with The Middle just yet.
According to a new report from Deadline, Eden Sher, who played Sue Heck on the original series, is poised to star in a new potential ABC comedy all about her character. The basic premise is that this would be set a few years in the future following the original show, where she is out of college and living life as a young adult. There would be potential for other actors from The Middle, even if they were only recurring characters, to appear.
As for when this series could premiere, it could be sooner than you would first imagine. If ABC is able to make a deal with studio Warner Bros. TV in the near future, what that would mean is that the pilot could film this fall and the series could be targeted to premiere at midseason. There are obviously a lot of different variables at play here; however, given the recent cancellation of Roseanne by ABC, it does make it a little bit easier for the network to find the real estate to put a show like this new spin-off out there.
As for whether or not we think it is a good idea, why not? The Middle has a very strong, passionate following, and it is easy to see why viewers would stick around for a show following the Sue character. If this show was a little less successful, or if the Sue character was a little less popular, we would be more on the fence. This actually makes more sense than the Goldbergs spinoff, which ABC has already ordered to series and will be airing at some point during this season.
What do you think about this the middle spin-off, and does it help to ease the pain when it comes to the original show ending? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
