ABC may consider keeping Roseanne actors for new show
According to a new report via Entertainment Weekly, the network’s executives are considering finding a way to utilize much of the original Roseanne cast for another series — it’s complicated, though, since they likely wouldn’t be the same characters they played on the previous show. Since Roseanne Barr is the creator of the original show and is at least partly responsible for creating most of the key players within it, she would benefit financially from using Darlene or any of the other familiar faces from the original show. With that in mind, there would need to be a new show with enough differences to avoid a lawsuit … while also still being similar enough to attract some diehard fans of Roseanne.
There are conversations that are going to take place all about this subject today, but for the time being we are not altogether confident that anything is going to come out of this — or that it should. While it makes sense to consider this given that the production company is already on the hook for some of these actor salaries for Roseanne season 11, turning that into a different show could offer up some sort of return on their investment. ABC also stands to lose a lot of potential ad revenue given that Roseanne was one of the most-popular scripted series on all of network television.
In the end, though, this feels too complicated to work and, beyond that, it is hard to envision the Roseanne core audience tuning in and watching a show without the star, especially with all of the baggage that is now out there. Also, we’re not sure any of these actors would want to continue given the specter that would hang over a new project. Roneanne said a racist thing, the show is over, and it now feels like a better move for everyone to move on. We understand why ABC would want to consider this, but hopefully they come to the decision that it is really not worth all that much of the effort.
