Roseanne Roundup: Emmy campaign over; CMT, Hulu drop repeats
Moving away from the Emmys – While we’re not quite sure that the series was much of a contender to get an Emmy nomination in the first place, a source close to ABC tells TVLine that they are not going to push forward with any sort of promotional campaign for the show. While it’s possible there are already some submissions out there, we cannot imagine anyone within the cast actively promoting some of this now.
All of this is a direct result of Roseanne Barr’s racist declaration on Twitter earlier today, something that has already cost many cast and crew members jobs. There was a lot of work that went into making this show and much of it wasn’t offensive; yet, Roseanne was at the top of the show and she bears the responsibility of what she says. She crossed an enormous, unforgivable line, and these are some of the consequences of it.
Old episodes are pulled – As of Wednesday, a source confirms to Deadline that TV Land, Paramount Network and CMT are going to no longer air repeats of the series. Repeats of the show were airing in these places, while Hulu has also pulled the tenth season from their streaming catalog. All of this happened extremely quickly, and it does show the power of immediacy in today’s culture. All of these networks and services do stand to lose a lot of money and there could be many stories about the financial implications of this in the coming weeks.
This is what we’ll say, though, to people who claim that this was just some sort of political agenda at work here — networks love money. Therefore, if they thought they could keep making money with some sort of conscience intact, they’d keep at it. Roseanne’s comments made that untenable — they should have developed a conscience a little bit earlier, but better late than never, right?
