Ink Master: Angels review: Did Austin Rose defeat Ryan Ashley Malarkey?

Ink Master: AngelsTonight’s Ink Master: Angels featured a showdown in Portland between a former winner in Ryan Ashley Malarkey and a real underdog in Austin Rose. Given that Portland is a place know for the Rose Garden (we’ll always call it that!), doesn’t that feel appropriate?

Austin was a very good artist, but we think that’s only going to be one of two things that he is really known for. To go along with his talent as an artist, it also just turns out that Austin is very confident in his abilities. Really confident. As a matter of fact, he is so confident that we’re not sure that he has any more room for confidence! He was full-on cocky before getting into the showdown with Ryan, and that is not entirely the sort of thing we would do. Why are you going to challenge one of the most formidable artists out there?

What’s also somewhat notable about this showdown was that by the end of the episode, it actually felt like the artists in Portland were rooting for Ryan to win more so than they were him. It felt almost like he jinxed himself into getting some bad luck here, and he had that first and foremost when his canvas struggled to sit still for much of the final face-off. As a matter of fact, this is the first time in recent Ink Mater: Angels memory that a canvas stopped before the time was up just because of the fact that she couldn’t sit for it anymore.

Well, here is where things get interesting — Ryan didn’t finish her tattoo, either. Her issue was simply more that she bit off more than she can chew, and to go along with that she did something that was full color and completely different than what she typically does. We appreciate the risk a lot and her tattoo was still really beautiful. Both of these tattoos, despite all of the roadblocks, actually both turned out really nice! For such a chaotic challenge, both artists actually turned in some work that they can be pretty proud of in the end.

Who was the winner? – The real issue here is if you vote for complexity or if you choose the tattoo that had the most ambition. This was tough … but Austin wins! Despite him being aggressively confident and having some bad luck, he now has a chance to prove himself on Ink Master season 11. You better hope that he is prepared for that now since it’s going to be a crazy, intense ride.
