America’s Got Talent video: Meet magician Shin Lim!

Shin Lim

In this America’s Got Talent piece leading up to Tuesday’s premiere, we are here to introduce you to another act in Shin Lim who you are going to be seeing a lot of coverage about over the course of the next few days — provided, of course, he is featured in the episode on Tuesday night.

You can watch Shin’s full audition within the video below, one in which he delivers for you a wide array of different close-up card tricks that are very much themed all around a single card that he has Tyra Banks sign. While we’ve certainly seen many a fascinating card trick on the show in the past, never before have we seen so many different illusions done based on one simple card. It’s beautiful to watch, and really in so many ways visual and artistic. Lim turns this into a spectacle, and that’s not something that you see often from close-up magic.

There are two things that we feel like every successful America’s Got Talent magician should have: Commitment and charisma. Even if they are presenting themselves in a goofy way, you have to know that things are polished in the way in which they are intended to be. Lim is very much a serious magician and you see that from the very start here — he takes his work extremely seriously and works to craft it into something that leads you in awe. He’s one of the few magicians who doesn’t spend a whole lot of time speaking and instead allows the magic to speak for itself.

Let’s close by making one thing clear: We would use a golden buzzer on Shin in a heartbeat. One of our biggest frustrations about season 12 was that it devoted way too much time devoting golden buzzers to singers and singing-adjacent acts. We want to see more variety get a chance to shine — and, to go along with that, get the promotion that they so deserve. Shin Lim seems to be worthy of everything. He’s an accomplished magician who often instructs others of his craft when not performing, and for those curious has also appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. You can visit his site for more information.
