Should Madam Secretary season 5 feature a Presidential campaign?

Madam Secretary season 4

Unfortunately, Madam Secretary is done for the season over on CBS — it would’ve been great to get another new episode tonight, but that is (alas) not going to be the case. We’re stuck waiting now all the way until the fall to see what is coming next, and given the most-recent cliffhanger, we have a feeling that this is not going to be an altogether easy thing for many people to do.

While this may not be a cliffhanger as dangerous as one where a character’s life is on the line, we certainly do think there are some emotional stakes in knowing that Elizabeth McCord has a vested interest in running for President. This is something that has weighed on her mind for a little while, but McCord made the official decision to go through with this after realizing that it was going to be hard for her to reconcile the fact that much of her work that she’s done regarding reducing the threat of a nuclear attack could be ruined by the work of another President. That’s not something she wants to picture and therefore, it’s enough motivation for her to fight for what’s right.

Now that we’ve said this, there are some other questions that start to surface — most notably, if CBS is going to accelerate the story of Madam Secretary so that it focuses on Elizabeth’s Presidential run. The challenge in doing this is mostly that it wasn’t all that long ago that we saw a Presidential campaign storyline on this show and if you do it too much, in turn you run the risk of overexposure. Also, you don’t just want to run past Elizabeth’s entire tenure as Secretary of State to the point in which you start to miss out on all of the good stuff in between.

The one issue that we foresee the writers having now is this: You’ve let the metaphorical toothpaste out of the tube! Now that we’ve had a chance to get a hint that Elizabeth may be running for office, is there really a way to temper future excitement? You can’t just resume business as usual without that being a distraction on some level.
