America’s Got Talent video: Flau’jae raps ‘Guns Down’ for father Camouflage
It probably takes you about twenty seconds tops before you realize that Flau’jae is the real deal. She may only be 14 years old, but she has the maturity to take on difficult subject matter like gun violence — especially in this form. Music can be powerful and healing, and the best types of hip-hop to us are the types that reverberate a sort of social consciousness. Think in terms of Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, or early Kanye West, who really bring you back because of their lyrical content just as much as some of their actual musical talent.
This audition is absolutely one we’re going to remember for some time and for many different reasons. For one, we rarely get someone’s actual story channeled through their act like this — sure, there are many sad stories that are told on the America’s Got Talent stage, but often the transition from those over to the performance is disjointed as best. To go along with that, there haven’t really been too many success hip-hop acts in the entire Got Talent franchise. One of the most notable ones we can think of is via Bars and Melody, a young hip-hop duo act who actually got Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer over on Britain’s Got Talent for a rap they performed about bullying.
If there’s one weird moment in the audition, it’s of a few audience members randomly clapping with the biggest smiles on their face. Is this really the right sort of song for that? Not exactly. It really feels like at times the collective audience, who have been trained in cheering and clapping, don’t know exactly what to do here.
