SNL wishlist: Why Criminal Minds’ Paget Brewster would be a fun fit
The idea for this series stems from one simple thing: Considering that SNL is a series that is based on TV, they don’t actually book that many TV stars as hosts. While the show did a better job in season 43 getting former TV stars like Tina Fey, Amy Schumer, Will Ferrell, and John Mulaney on board, there were actually just six hosts who are current series regulars on another show: Kumail Nanjiani, Tiffany Haddish, Donald Glover, Larry David, Bill Hader, and Sterling K. Brown. We’re included David just because, at least for now, we are considering Curb Your Enthusiasm current even though it only airs sporadically.
Keep coming back over the next few days to get some more picks for perfect future SNL hosts — for day though, we’re putting the focus on Criminal Minds star Paget Brewster who is someone we would love to see host the show!
There hasn’t been much Criminal Minds exposure on SNL over the years, which makes some sense because of the fact that NBC doesn’t have a whole lot of incentive to help a show from a rival network — but, for the Wishlist series, we try not to think about that and instead live in a perfect world where NBC doesn’t care and picks people who they think are a good fit, have a great sense of humor and don’t mind being silly to get a laugh. That being said though, they have had stars of other network’s shows host before — look at Kerry Washington. There’s always hope!
With Paget, the fun of getting someone like her to do the show is that even though she’s best known as Emily Prentiss, she’s got an extensive history doing comedy and she’s hilarious — it started in the late nineties with an arc on Friends, but continued to other great shows like Community and now Another Period. She’s also shown via podcast form that she has a tremendous sense of humor. The sort of hosts that you want on SNL, at least from our vantage point, are people who are both funny and can also find ways to surprise you. We know that standup comedians are going to be consistently strong hosts, but you do lose some of that element of surprise since the average viewer automatically relates them to some of their comedic work.
As for what we could imagine Brewster delivering as an SNL host, there are quite a few things — obviously, you could do a crime-TV parody, but why not also do some things that allow her to do some physical comedy or are just off-the-wall silly? We know that she’d be game for it — also, with her on board NBC it would probably get a nice combination of loyal SNL fans and also Criminal Minds supporters coming over to that network at the same time. This is what we really don’t understand about the sketch show not hiring more TV actors from other networks — if even just 20% of Criminal Minds viewers come over and add to the average SNL audience, you’ve got one of the better-rated shows of the season!
