Following tonight’s finale airing over on NBC, what are the chances of a Champions season 2 renewal happening in the future?
In terms of the pure facts, no official decision has been made for the comedy; this is why the show is still listed as “in limbo” in our renewal/cancellation guide. Yet, we do think that it’s fairly clear that a season 2 is not going to see the light of day.
For starters, the ratings are the be-all, end-all when it comes to saving a show like this, and the ratings as of late have not exactly been good. For most of the first season, the show was getting numbers in the 0.4-0.5 range in the 18-49 demographic. That’s simply not good enough for a network comedy to be saved at the moment. Beyond that, the finale is airing on a Friday night at a special time outside of May sweeps. When you think about all of that, it’s a pretty strong signal that the show is not coming back for more.
It’s mostly just strange that NBC hasn’t formally announced the fate of the series yet given that it, coupled with Timeless and Ghosted over on Fox, are some of the few shows that haven’t been formally handed an end one way or another just yet. It’s possible that the verdict of some of these shows could even be handed down later today — the start of Memorial Day Weekend is a time in which many people, even outside of the TV industry, choose to bury certain news items that they don’t want out there at some other point. It’s a reasonably effective strategy, albeit one that we’re not altogether fond of personally.
