Summer TV Preview: What Animal Kingdom season 3 is set to deliver

Animal Kingdom season 3 is set to come onto TNT on May 29, and with that in mind, isn’t now the perfect time to dive into it further? That’s what this new edition of our Summer TV Preview is effectively all about!

Moving into season 3, it is clear that there are some serious issues to resolve, starting off here with the fact that Smurf is in prison. She is a character who loves to puppeteer, but how in the world do you do that while sitting in a cell? That is one of the many things that the third season is going to take a look at. We know Smurf to be one of the most proactive characters out there when it comes to setting up jobs and working things, and we have a feeling that she may continue to try and do that.

The whole idea of changing Smurf’s environment while still having her be roughly the same character really helps to hone in on what Animal Kingdom is really all about at its core. You want to keep the series about crime and about family, but you have to continuously find new ways to remix the premise. You don’t want to change who these people are too much, but you want to change their circumstances. For Baz, these said circumstances are a little more severe due to his life being on the line. There have been rumors for some time regarding Scott Speedman’s long-term future with the series, but for now, we feel like the insular focus should just be on Baz’s predicament. If he survives, does he really want this life anymore?

What’s completely new?

This time around, it is the presence of none other than Denis Leary. The character is Deran’s father, a drifter who was kicked out by Smurf years before. It feels appropriate that he would choose to resurface right when she ends up behind bars; he may seize this as his opportunity to come in and try to cause a little bit of trouble to suit his needs.

If you loved the first few seasons of Animal Kingdom in terms of some of the drama they brought to the table, we’ve got a good feeling you will also enjoy season 3. We’re certainly going to have more coverage throughout the summer!
