Survivor: Ghost Island interview: Angela Perkins discusses edit, gameplay, Wendell vote, and more
We spoke to Angela about that challenge and also some of the other things that she brought to the game this season. (This interview was conducted at the same time as an interview with Laurel, so you’ll hear from her at one point during this as well.)
CarterMatt – What made you vote for Wendell over Domenick?
Angela Perkins – It was all about who played the better game and who I had the strongest connection with. Like I’ve told everybody, I went into Tribal Council with my mind set on one person and I ended up writing somebody completely different down. It was because of the dialogue between the three remaining and the jury. That made a huge impact on my vote.
What’s one thing about you that you wish people had a chance to see about you out there?
Angela – The relationships. The only alliance they really did show was with Chris. They definitely didn’t show the alliance that Dom, Wendell, Laurel and I had. After the vote against me early on, I had a similar conversation with Dom and Wendell in which they vowed to me that they would never write my name down ever again.
Laurel – Everyone out there loved Ang, including myself. I didn’t feel like they showed our relationship. Ang was like everyone’s friend and everyone’s mom out there. Everyone loved being around her. I know Ang says she’s fine with it, but I hurt for Ang that they didn’t show any of that.
You mentioned your alliance with Chris and there were some people who had a hard time working with him this season. What was it about him that you found appealing?
Chris comes off strong, but he’s a genuine guy. His story — who could not love the kid? He started to take care of his mother at 17, and the love he displayed for his mother does carry over emotionally, especially to me.
The show made a big deal about the tribe colors and the stools at the fire-making challenge, since Wendell didn’t want to sit on the orange stool. In retrospect, is all of that something you care about at all?
No, I don’t. That was one more stride of strategic gameplay for me. I thought he was slightly stronger, but I felt like I had a pretty good chance at making fire. If I did, that was one more strategic play towards me, that I give this guy something that made him feel better [the stool he wanted]. I may not have won a lot of immunities, but I took care of people. I thought that this was the best move for me.
At the time you were voted out, how much were you thinking about arguments that you were going to make in front of the jury?
I was extremely prepared. I knew going into final tribal that I was just going to be a listener. I knew everything that had happened leading up to that point. I was more focused on hearing everyone else’s thoughts and conversations — feelings that they had. The dialogue did help me think through my voting process.
What was the one move that you really wanted to make but didn’t? For example, maybe it was something you just couldn’t feasibly do.
I guess be a little bit disloyal (laughs), but it’s hard to break that value, especially after going through so much of your life valuing loyalty.
Do you want to play again?
If you had asked me a couple of weeks ago I’d have said no, but as of now, absolutely. You have some time to process it and decompress it.
