Law & Order: SVU season 20 premiere date hopes for Mariska Hargitay cast
Before doing too much else, can we just kick things off with a celebration of the fact that we get a season 20? It’s incredible in many ways beyond words that the show continues to have so much life and the ability to tell powerful stories. It’s obviously a blessing and a curse — it’s a blessing to have more of Mariska Hargitay and the rest of the cast, but it is sad that some of the stories featured on the show are still so relevant. There still has not been enough done to stop sexual assault and abuse within this country.
Moving into season 20, there are a few different things worth noting. For starters, this is going to tie both Gunsmoke and the original Law & Order as one of the longest-running series of all time and that is a tremendous achievement — one that absolutely cannot be stated enough. It’s a testament to the strength of the cast and the crew. With that being said, it doesn’t seem as though there are any plans for the powers that be to slow down. Show executive producer Michael Chernuchin told CarterMatt earlier today that he wants to get that record season 21 and that it’s something that he thinks about.
The formal SVU premiere date is probably going to be announced at some point this fall and based on most typical patterns, we expect to see it at some point during the end of September or the start of October. One thing that is going to be very different is the timeslot — for the first time in years SVU will not be Wednesday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern. It will be moving to Thursdays at 10:00 p.m. Eastern, as it and Chicago Fire are swapping places. As for how this impacts the ratings, that remains to be seen. Personally, we just want to see it continue to perform well so that it can continue to stick around for as long as the cast and crew would like for it to.
