Outlander season 4 character questions: A look at Caitlin O’Ryan’s Lizzie Wemyss

Outlander season 4 - Lizzie Wemmys

We’re getting into Memorial Day Weekend coming up, which is in turn one of the slowest TV weekends of the entire year.

With that in mind, we’re presenting a number of Outlander stories to try and help keep you engaged — to be specific, we are continuing forward with the Character Questions features we started publishing after the season 3 finale. Expect one daily about some of the new additions until Monday.

In today’s edition, we are putting the focus primarily on none other than newcomer Caitlin O’Ryan and her character of Lizzie Wemyss, who is very much important to the story of season 4, especially as it pertains to Brianna (Sophie Skelton). There are some book spoilers ahead, so continue forward with that in mind.

Who is she? – Lizzie is a young woman who finds herself in a very precarious spot within Drums of Autumn, as her family circumstances lead to such a crisis that her father is forced to put both himself and her into indentured servitude. He eventually sells her to Brianna so that he doesn’t have to sell her to a man who has far more nefarious motivations for her. The two eventually embark on a voyage together and develop a bond, though there are many trials and tribulations that await them both.

How should she be used? – What makes Lizzie and Brianna interesting is that they have similar paths, but come from very different times. They each have a degree of innocence with the adventure that they are on, but have also endured enough hardship to be resilient enough to take most of these said tribulations on. We would hope that the writers would capture some of Lizzie’s spirit and also show that she is someone who could be a valuable resource for Brianna. Given their similarities in age, they can communicate together in ways that she may not with others.

We see Lizzie in part as a foil for Bree, but also a way to showcase a different part of life in the 18th century than what we have seen largely elsewhere on the show. We also do hope that the show highlights some of Lizzie’s mistakes, as she makes some that do have some important ramifications throughout season 4.

What could come next? – The writers should also feel no need to focus on every aspect of this character right away. Outlander is a long series of at least two more seasons beyond this upcoming one; Lizzie has a role in both The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, so it’s feasible to think this role will translate over to the show itself. Casting O’Ryan should make for a great move, given that she can immerse herself and blend into this role. We have the utmost faith in the casting department after they have discovered so much talent on the series to date.
