UnReal season 4 will reportedly premiere first on Hulu
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the drama will first air its potential final season on Hulu, instead of on its original home on Lifetime. This is a rare, bold, and surprising move, however, this can be seen as a positive deal. The steaming service was eager to air seasons three and four of the series because those familiar with the deal say that UnReal is among the most popular shows watched on the streaming service. A release date for Seasons 3 and 4 on Hulu has yet to be determined, however sources confirm that it is expected to come far before its premiere on Lifetime.
While it will debut on Hulu, this does not mean that Lifetime is exiting the scripted series. They still have many other series lined up over the next couple of years, including some featuring such prominent producers as Greg Berlanti and Jenji Kohan behind the scenes.
While UnReal wasn’t ever a ratings giant, the show earned its renewals because of the creative direction the writers planned for the show alongside the critical reception. This, in my opinion, is a rare occurrence because for the Big Four networks, it’s all about ratings and demographics, but Lifetime cared more about content of the show instead. We have much respect for Lifetime’s decisions. It gave us hope that someday other networks will follow.
The show has received critical success after being nominated for an Emmy for its writing. This earned Sarah Gertrude Shapiro an overall deal was she signed a multiple-year pact with A+E Studios that included writing and exec producing duties on the show as well as a development component. While the possible end of UnReal is upsetting, Shapiro’s deal should be a positive sign that more well-produced show will emerge. There’s also a very small hope that UnReal could continue. Shapiro and Stacy Rukeyser, the current showrunner, has stated that she wants the show to continue.
Either way we look forward to watching Season 4.
