More Timeless talk as season 3 decision delay continues

For everyone out there wondering what in the world is going on with NBC and Timeless, it turns out that many people who work on the show are feeling the same amount of frustration.

In a new post on Twitter (see below!), the series’ official writers room makes it clear that they’ve believed that there was an answer coming on the show’s future a couple of different times, only to have said answer pushed further down the road. At the moment, Timeless and Fox’s Ghosted remain the only series that both premiered and ended within the 2018-19 broadcast season that do not have a firm decision behind them just yet. (Late last night Fox canceled LA to Vegas — we’re not including Code Black here given that it still has the majority of its season still to air.)

What in the world is NBC waiting on? We do think that the writers ay in best in their uncertainty — this really is a strange, uncertain situation. You can argue that the long wait is a good thing given that it means that the powers-that-be are seriously thinking about the show’s future. If they wanted to cancel it, they could’ve just done that already! It’s not as though the longer they wait on this, the less outcry they are going to have. As a matter of fact, we’d argue that even more outcry could be coming if they cancel it now given that there’s going to be more attention on it. The news cycle is starting to slow down elsewhere!

If you’re wondering why the long wait could be a bad thing, it could be because there are some internal discussions that could fall apart at any moment. It’s already unusual in itself that a renewal / cancellation decision is taking this long, largely because most of them happen before upfronts. The main reason why NBC can afford to take longer here is because they have no intention of premiering a Timeless season 3 this fall — if it returns, it will likely be in the same timeslot as season 2 on Sundays since they won’t want to give away a more lucrative timeslot to a show with lower ratings.
