The Flash season 4 finale could set up season 5 Big Bad

If you’re interested in learning who the season 5 Big Bad is for The Flash, there is a reasonably good chance that you will learn during the season 4 finale.

You’ve got, in the end, a number of things that are going to be revealed within this episode. Not only do you have the conclusion of the final showdown with DeVoe, but beyond just that there is for certain the reveal of the Mystery Girl. While executive producer Todd Helbing does not definitively tell Entertainment Weekly that a Big Bad reveal is coming, it does seem to be something that they are working towards:

“It depends on how the cut turns out, but yeah. We filmed something that will be up next season, and most people that are familiar with comics will probably be able to deduce who the big bad is for next season. I’m not sure my mother will know, but if it ends up in the cut — depending on how much time we have. There are two cliffhangers: There’s the explanation of who mystery girl is and how she’ll play into next season, then there’s also a potential tee-up for who the villain is.”

Hopefully, this ending makes the cut so that we’ve got something more to be excited about there. We just hope that the arc this season shows the producers that they don’t need to go back to yet another speedster as the main villain in order to tell an effective story — while we know that they can do a number of effective speedster villains (we’ve seen so many of them on the show already), it’s still hard to imagine how they could tell a story using any of them that feels new or somewhat different from anything that we have seen before.

If it is a speedster villain, there is a part of our brain that likes the whole twist that the Mystery Girl is actually evil … but we think that the show is probably a bit more lighthearted than that, especially on the other side of a difficult and devastating battle with DeVoe.
