Supergirl season 3 episode 19 photo: The attempts to test Reign
When Annable was last in this lab, she was playing Samantha Arias, a woman desperate to learn precisely what was wrong with her. Now, she’s playing Reign, who was captured and brought there against her will. In some ways, having the character captured feels like a victory, but it still does on some level feel temporary. Do you really think that Reign is going to be content to be stuck within a metaphorical cage the rest of the season?
From a writing standpoint, one of the most interesting things about where Supergirl is at the moment is that it feels like the writers have really put themselves into a precarious corner. They have already vanquished two other Worldkillers in Purity and Pestilence, and with that their main Big Bad has captured. While Reign may now have all of the powers of these other two characters, is there any way with her as one single enemy to be anywhere near as threatening as the three Worldkillers together? Beyond that, won’t the DEO find out more ways to successfully contain her during this latest round of research?
We do imagine that stopping Reign is going to be one of the biggest priorities of the second half of the season, but we do also think that it goes beyond just that. It’s about saving Sam, if possible, just as much as it is trying to vanquish her alter ego from the world. It’s still hard to know if one can be done without the other.
