Legacies: Can The Originals spin-off deliver on the fall schedule?
While we’re going to have a little more of an in-depth look at The Originals spin-off Legacies next month as we really get our Fall TV Preview series going, we did want to spend a moment today speculating over the show’s potential.
In ordering this spin-off which is set within the same world as both the aforementioned show and The Vampire Diaries, The CW is taking a big risk. The Originals has been a good show for a while, but unfortunately, its ratings have not been fantastic in some time (though it has done decently this season). Meanwhile, the numbers for The Vampire Diaries were far from extraordinary in its final seasons.
So what is the expectation for this show? It’s a reasonable question to wonder at the moment since by and large, we don’t have high hopes that the show will be able to recruit new fans to the franchise. We’d be thrilled if it does, but adding new viewers is hard at a time when there are so many options and a show entitled Legacies may not be the easiest sell for people who don’t know about the vampires or any other supernatural entity as first established on The Vampire Diaries.
What Legacies has going for it is a really good timeslot following Supernatural. However, what it has working against it is a number of fans bummed out that Wayward Sisters wasn’t picked up and may not watch it out of frustration. (That’s been the tenor of things we’ve seen on social media.) We do hope that people give it a shot — there are probably plenty of people who didn’t give The Originals enough of a chance to know just how good it is; meanwhile, it’s not anyone on this show’s fault that The CW chose to pick it up. We were hoping for both it and also Wayward Sisters to get a pickup.
If Legacies can draw anywhere between a 0.4 and 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic throughout its first season, we imagine that we will be able to celebrate the legacy of this show for quite some time.
