While this sneak peek is fascinating from the vantage point of strategy, it does also hint at a larger discussion this season so far: The flashbacks. Fear the Walking Dead this season is so far going for a far more ambitious approach in its storytelling. The writers are telling a story that spans multiple different time periods and that can be immensely challenging. Beyond just that, it’s even more of a struggle since this is a genre show with certain expectations.
Do we like it? In some ways, certainly. What we do think that this storytelling mechanism is bringing to the table is an opportunity for the creators to be a little more innovative in how they approach the characters. To go along with that, it is giving them a chance to create a new sort of mystery than what they are used to. We are now wondering as to whether or not certain characters are actually alive, and it dish into of course all the other dangers and craziness that come with this show. There are also some more new faces that we could end up meeting along the way.
Now that we have laid all of that out there, it does feel as though the series should really do its part to wrap up the flashbacks and get into a single timeframe by the second half of this season. We do think to a certain extent that the linear storytelling worked, especially during season 3. Use these flashbacks to keep everyone on their toes, and then figure out a way to get back to doing exactly what the show was doing so well last season. We like to think that this is the best of both worlds, and maybe the mid-season finale will introduce that a little bit more.
In general, there is clearly a lot going on with Fear the Walking Dead right now and most of it is fairly successful. The sneak peek below is fascinating, and in general some of the new characters are working. Does it feel like a totally different show than it once did? Absolutely, but that shouldn’t be much of a surprise given that there are new showrunners this year.
