TV logjams: NCIS vs. The Flash, Roseanne, The Gifted, and The Voice

There are many interesting TV logjams coming up over the course of the upcoming fall season, but there are few as interesting as the one airing on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. After all, you’ve got two shows with large family audiences competing against the biggest crime procedural on TV and then a pair of different superhero shows.

NCIS – Probably the show set up the best for long-term success. While we think Roseanne hurts it slightly, it remains the only crime show in this timeslot this fall and likely benefits from Lethal Weapon being bumped back an hour.

Roseanne – While it dominated the schedule this spring, we anticipate some diminishing returns here now that some of the early hype surrounding the Roseanne Barr series is starting to die away.

The Voice – It’s been suffering some diminishing returns for a while now. It’s a fun show and it’ll do fine, but at this point it’s effectively the same thing year after year, including the winner who will be forgotten about soon after.

The Flash – We’re a little worried about the Scarlet Speedster in this spot, just because the show has to face all of the typical competition plus another superhero show that may not have as much fatigue. Expect some declines.

The Gifted – We also don’t think airing against The Flash is a good move here, especially since The Gifted hasn’t necessarily gotten a ton of attention since the season 1 finale. It’s already in danger of being forgotten, but if viewers find it we do think it should manage to keep at least most of its audience. The established base should miss it after the long hiatus.
