The Once Upon a Time – Zorro reveal was planned for some time
Wouldn’t it have been nice to get a larger reveal than this? Sure, but as it turns out there’s a reason we didn’t see more of it — beyond just the fact that the showrunners ran out of space.
In speaking on this very subject to TVLine, show executive producer Edward Kitsis explained that “the truth was Zorro is not public domain and we couldn’t get the rights … So it’s up to the audience to imagine what could have been!” Ultimately, rights issues are what kept a few different characters from happening over the years, but this one could have especially been fun given that Zorro hasn’t been featured much over the past few years and this could have been a nice reinvention to the character. Once Upon a Time, after all, did do a great job presenting many different characters to a new generation.
Even if the show got an eighth season, we weren’t sure that we would’ve gotten back to the story of Lily and the search for her dad. We’re just glad that we got a mention, even if it was a small one. Granted, there are still plenty of other loose ends that the show producers didn’t address in the finale, but that’s just something that was bound to happen with a show like this. Because it was so ambitious, there were of course many different things that were introduced and not all of them worked.
