Could Designated Survivor season 3 move to Netflix?

Designated Survivor season 3

Is it possible that a Designated Survivor season 3 could actually happen at Netflix? This may be one of the more interesting debate that we’ve gotten into this month.

At this point, we’ve started to develop a pretty boilerplate reaction to anytime someone suggests that there showcould be saved by Netflix. More often than not, it just doesn’t happen. Years ago it was a little more common for the streaming provider to pick up shows like Longmire or Arrested Development that were previously cancelled at their original home. However, what’s different now is that Netflix has dozens upon dozens of original shows. They no longer have the need to rely on existing properties in order to get subscribers on board. They have faith in what they already have, which is a great thing for them but not so much a great thing for people who want to see their favorite shows saved.

Yet, with Designated Survivor there is a little bit of hope that Netflix could actually pick the series up. According to Deadline, producer eOne is in talks with the streaming service about it being taken up there. What is the logic in Netflix wanting to do this move? A big part of it may just have to do with the idea of what Designated Survivor on a streaming service could be. One of the problems that the show routinely runs into on a network like ABC is that its content has to be a little more regulated. Designated Survivor on Netflix could be a little braver, and also a little bit more ambitious. It would give the producers a whole lot more to work with topically. It could also give the service an heir apparent to House of Cards.

Beyond all of this, there is also the issue of ratings. One of the biggest reasons ABC chose to cancel the show is simply because of the fact that the live plus same day ratings for Designated Survivor just weren’t working for their business model. On the other hand, it’s pretty clear that Netflix has a different way of earning money. They don’t care if people watch it live so long as they do watch, and if the overall numbers for Designated Survivor are good enough to work on that platform, that’s really all that matters.

At the moment, things are still extremely early so it is too early to tell us the weather or not this could actually happen. That is especially true when you consider the fact that Hulu in America actually has the streaming rights for Designated Survivor rather than Netflix. It’s not all that often that you see so stiff from one streaming provider to the next.
