Lucifer season 3 finale: A tribute to the fallen
Basically, Marcus a.k.a. Cain is dead, and pending some sort of crazy-dramatic revival, it’s hard to imagine the character ever returning at some point in the future. When Welling first joined the series prior to the start of season 3, the reaction form many, especially Smallville villains, was a complete and utter jaw-drop. It’d been a long time since we’d seen him on a major television series and there was plenty of excitement/intrigue that came with it.
What’s been really fun with the Marcus role is that Welling has taken on a character very much different from Clark — he’s manipulative, immortal (at least for a while), and in the end, rather deadly and sinister. We loved watching him mostly because he wasn’t the prototypical villain with simple goals a la taking over the world. He was a desperate man who spent much of his time trying to die, and almost every single move that he made (save for his attempt to woo Chloe) was to fulfill that end goal. He never event meant to kill Charlotte but when that happened, it was pretty darn clear at that point that the toothpaste was not going to be able to be put back into the tube. He had to kill Lucifer just because Lucifer was going to stop at nothing to stop him.
Beyond Lucifer, we hope that Welling gets a chance to take on some other interesting, dynamic characters — whether they be in this particular genre or not. When he first joined it felt hard to imagine that this was anything more than a one-season role, even if Fox had renewed the show. We like to think of this as a nice reintroduction to him as a TV actor and in the aftermath of it, we can only hope that there is some more fun stuff hanging around the corner.
