911 season 2 sets Jennifer Love Hewitt as new series regular

Jennifer Love Hewitt

In the wake of the (apparent) exit of Connie Britton, 911 season 2 has now found itself another big name in Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Fox announced on Monday that the former Client List star, who previously was a part of one season of CBS’ Criminal Minds, will play a new call-center operator by the name of Maddie. She will fill the apparent void left by the departure of Abby at the end of the first season, plus of course still allow the first-responders series to have that call-center component that you don’t get on similar shows.

In terms of connections Maddie has to other characters on the show, a big one is that she is the sister of Buck (Oliver Stark). With that, she should have an almost-instant connection with the rest of the characters within the series.

This casting for Hewitt is certainly a big deal, especially given that 911 proved itself throughout the first season to be one of the most-popular shows of its kind. It delivered extremely strong ratings for Fox and left there very little doubt that it was coming back for more. Unfortunately, Britton had only signed a one-year deal as a favor of sorts to series executive producer Ryan Murphy; she has an openness to return at some point in the future, but is also working on some other projects that could make that fairly difficult in terms of the actual schedule.

The challenge obviously for season 2 of the show is avoiding the sophomore slump. When 911 first premiered, there was almost a looseness about it since nobody actually knew just how it was going to perform. It was rushed rather quickly onto the air and was only by the end of it a couple of weeks behind the episodes hitting the small screen in production.
